Generalist vs Specialist vs Holist

By

“Oh, I am going to become a generalist. Why limit yourself to doing only one thing as a human?” This was me one year ago. But not anymore.

Let me explain.

I worked as a generalist for the past two years, and here’s what I’ve realized:

The true value of generalists lies not just in their ability to do multiple things; that’s just the beginning.

The purpose of performing multiple tasks is to gain broad insights. To reach the highest potential, a generalist needs to channel these broad insights to solve specific problems.

Similarly, specialists are not meant to exist in the cage of their expertise. It’s when specialists connect their expertise to a broader range of applications that they become most powerful.

Either way, the idea is to move towards holism.

It makes no sense to obsess over the ‘Generalist vs. Specialist’ debate. It’s time we embrace Yin-Yang, not just in the spiritual realms, but also in our daily lives.

The future belongs to the ‘holists’!
