Like everyone, I too was confused about what career path I should be marching on (honestly, I am still figuring it out 😁)
Few years back, I came across this small yet profound piece of advice that changed the way I perceived careers…
“Find something that allows you to express your intrinsic values.”
“Hmmm 🤔…”, was all that I said to myself.
But when I dug deeper into this, things started making sense, a lot of sense…
When I asked myself this question, I found a lot of such values coming to my mind.
After a lot of intropection, I was finally able to reach to the core of all these values.
From inside, I have always been looking for ‘freedom to explore’. No matter what I did, if there was something that did not allow for this, I changed my directions.
For example, just like most of the students in India, I went to tuition classes from class 9. But most of them never worked for me. I used to go there for some months, and then never went back.
Not because I did not enjoy studying or there was something wrong with the teacher. In fact, I was being taught by some of the best teachers in the city.
However, they somewhere restricted the freedom that was dear to me. I preferred learning on my own.
(Just to give you some context, I did pretty well in all my exams😄)
Same was the case with college.
During the pandemic, I came across entrepreneurship and freelancing.
To test the waters, I even worked on an education community for 6 months along with my friends. That was it. There was no going back now.
Entrepreneurship allows for a unique combination of freedom, no set rules, exploration, and lots of fun!
Same goes with freelancing.
Because it is aligned with my values, I don’t need to look for external motivation. It is something that just comes from within.
Now, I am not talking about entrepreneurship and freelancing as skills. Sure they can be learnt by anyone!
All I want to say is, if something allows you to express your intrinsic values, it no longer remains work.
What is work for others, becomes play for you. That makes life a whole lot fun!
Have you experienced the same?
